Clicker training is a reward based method for training dogs and other animals. The method utilizes a "click" sound as an event marker for desired behavior. The sound made by the clicker is always followed by the delivery of a reward.

The paired association between the "click" and the delivery of a reward works much like a camera taking a picture. Behavior that has been captured by the sound, then rewarded, is strengthened; making it likely to occur again.

The clicker is a teaching tool. Unless new behavior is required, the clicker is no longer needed once the dog has learned what to do. In some circumstances, the sound of the human voice can be substituted for the click.

Clicker training is based on operant conditioning principals. The precision afforded by use of a clicker enables rapid learning. For this reason, clicker training is the  preferred approach when modifying canine behavior problems that have beome persistent or annoying.
